Dear friends, a new beaded Basset Hound pin pendant is now available for sale in my Amazon Handmade store. This pin was created by stitching tiny glass seed beads to felt 2-3 at a time. The dog’s floppy ears were beaded in a peyote stitch to add movement and realism. Ears measure approx. 2cm long – they actually move when you touch them! Seed beads were also layered over the dog’s body to accentuate his wrinkles:) A 1″ pin is sewn to the back, as well as a custom made bail. Pins are backed with Ultrasuede & signed by The Lone Beader. Dear friends, last month I traveled to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This was my 3rd visit to the country. For those who have never had the opportunity to go to Mexico, I highly recommend visiting the Yucatan peninsula. This area is full of nature, handcrafted art, adventure, fish tacos, relaxation, and fun in the sun. For those who haven’t been there, I thought I would share a few photos of some beautiful beaded artwork I discovered along the way.

On my last night in Mexico, I visited Tierra Huichol, a gorgeous shop on 5th Avenue. This shop carries colorful hand beaded artwork made by indigenous Huichol (pronounced Wee-Chol) artists from the Pacific coast states of Jalisco and Nayarit. I had the opportunity to speak with the shop owner, Carlos, and he told me a little about the craft.

The Huichol people use mainly Czech glass seed beads because Japanese seed beads are just too perfect. First, an animal figure is covered with beeswax, then tiny glass beads are imbedded into the wax one by one to create these amazing designs. One of the main concerns is that over time, the wax may harden and some beads may fall off. I was told they are in search of a manmade material (similar to beeswax) which they can use to help reduce bead loss.

I think the most impressive thing about this art form is that the artist does not use a  drawing or outline to follow. They simply use their incredible artistic vision and creativity to create one of a kind pieces.

I was given the chart above to learn about all of the symbols which can be found in the artwork. Then I shopped around for awhile, and I found a small beaded gourd to purchase. This piece features images of the Peyote flower and the Deer.

The next time you visit Mexico, look for Huichol bead art in small tourist shops and at the airport. These artworks are affordable and easy to pack in your suitcase, so find one you would like to bring home. Your purchase will help support the culture and livelihood of a very gifted group of artists! :)

Dear friends, I have some exciting news! I have been invited to be a guest speaker and ‪beading teacher at the San Diego Bead Society & you are invited to attend! Monthly meeting takes place at Mingei International Museum on April 16, 2016 at 10am. Please view the Events page for more details:)

Beading class takes place Sunday, April 17, 2016 in Del Mar. You will make a beaded poodle pin, which can also be worn as a pendant! You will create a layered felt foundation, do bead embroidery using Delicas, as well as add texture by using the backstitch and stop stitch techniques. This class is suitable for beginning beaders and can be made in the color of your choice. Please see the ‪San Diego‬ Bead Society website for more details, class registration, and directions. Dear friends, I had a wonderful time visiting the San Diego Bead Society! I was only there for a few days, but the weather was gorgeous. I was happy to take a walk on the beach and go hiking at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve! Please see more photos on the San Diego Bead Society’s Facebook page.

While I was there, I taught my Toy Poodle bead embroidery class. One of the students brought her adorable miniature Pomeranian named Emily. Emily is the official mascot of the San Diego Bead Society!

And, here is the custom beaded miniature Pomeranian pin I made to look like her.. This design is now available as made to order on Etsy. What do you think?

And, since I’ve returned, I have also created a new custom beaded pet portrait, Dachshund in Flower Garden. This piece was inspired by a little dog named Frankie. Custom Beaded Borzoi Brooch

Dear friends, last week a customer sent me a photo of her beautiful Borzoi named Duma. She asked me to create a custom beaded pin which looks like her dog.

First, I cut out several layers of felt and stitched them together. Then, I added a tiny glass nose and eyes.

Then, I began stitching tiny Japanese size 15 glass seed beads to the felt 2-3 at a time. When the majority of the bead embroidery was complete, I added beaded fringe and a leather collar with sterling silver heart charm. A pin finding is sewn to the back and beadwork is backed with Ultrasuede.

6.5cm x 6cm

Dear friends, I hope you have been enjoying the summer! I have been keeping busy working on my Russian bead painting mostly, but recently, I received a new custom order which I would like to share with you. My customer asked for a beaded Mooney airplane pin!

My father was a private pilot – he flew a Stinson Voyager. When I was young, I spent many weekends hanging out in the hangar and going for airplane rides with my Dad. We even took a couple of long distance trips that I remember, and one time he actually let me ‘fly’ the plane. Flying with Dad was always an adventure. So, I was more than happy to make a bead-embroidered airplane!

First, I sent my customer a sketch. Once a design was agreed upon, I made several paper templates which I used to create felt shapes. I stitched the shapes to a larger piece of stiff beading foundation. I started out by beading several details, such as the windows, the stripe, and the nose. The windows are covered with tiny pieces of clear vinyl. I also embroidered the aircraft number with blue thread.

I started beading the body of the plane with 1x4mm Czech maco tube beads. These are extremely tiny and fragile, so I had to use my size 15 beading needle. Good thing I had a whole package of these needles because I ended up breaking several of them during this project. As you can see below, this piece required many tiny stitches!

And here is the finished piece. I created the propellor by wrapping pieces of sterling silver solder strips with silver plated wire. Then, I stitched each piece to the back.

It may not be an exact replica, but its pretty close!

This piece is a bit larger than most of my other pins, about 3.5″ x 3.5″. I stitched a pin and handmade bail to the back. This will definitely be a conversation piece. What do you think?

Dear friends, lately I have been obsessed with the Borzoi aka. Russian Wolfhound, so I decided to make a framed portrait of one..

I started by cutting out several layers of felt and stitched them together. Then, I chose my seed beads – 15/o matte brown seed beads and tiny 13/o gold charlottes and started beading!

After I finished beading the entire piece of felt, I layered even more seed beads and beaded fringe to create the dogs flowing hair. And lastly, I stitched the beadwork to a dark blue piece of Ultrasuede.

How does this dog breed look in a shadowbox frame?

Dear friends, I have created a new doggie – a beaded Rainbow Poodle pin pendant! Here is a peek at how it was created:

I have layered several felt shapes and stitched them together. Then, I stitched on a tiny glass nose. For the dog’s hair, I beaded short 2-bead stacks on its head and tail.

The dog’s body is made up of short 3-bead lazy-stitches which are very close together. This gives the piece the desired texture. I had wanted to make a rainbow poodle for awhile. I hope it makes you smile:) Please click the pic to view this item on Etsy..

Dear friends, I have been busy working on yet another custom order! Here is my latest – a large beaded Leopard brooch.. This is my first wild cat pin!

After working on a sketch, I transferred the image to a piece of stiff beading foundation and cut it out. Then, I cut out several more pieces of felt which would make the body of the cat appear to be in relief. After stitching these felt pieces together, I began beading the cat’s face. This piece is larger than usual, so it was a bit easier to get some detail in the cat’s face and nose. I used at least 8 different color seed beads as well as tiny glass eyes for the face.

By the time I started the body, I was using just 5 colors of seed beads. Two different shades of gold, black, transparent black, and a transparent cream color. When the Leopard’s body was beaded, I layered some matte brown beads to mimic the spots on the animal’s back.

I stitched wire to the back of the Leopard to stiffen his legs and tail, then I stitched Ultrasuede and a pin back to reverse side of the piece..

This piece is oversized. It measures approx. 3.5″ wide x 2.25″ tall… What do you think?  :D
